Mehl Sourdough

Mehl supplies our visitors with the most incredible, traditional German sourdough bread. Tanunda bakers Martin and Rebecca bake their bread over three days, using organic local flour to ensure their bread is as healthy as can be.

Visitors can delight in white, wholemeal, spelt and fruit sourdough loaves, as well as the fluffiest of crumpets.

Meet Mehl Sourdough

Who:  Rebecca and Martin

Where are you based? Tanunda

A little history: Established in 2014, Mehl Sourdough came about as Martin was missing the sourdough he enjoyed back in his homeland, Germany.  We ate a lot of bread whilst finding our signature breads and consider the bread we create to be our take on real bread, with some German influence.

What products do you sell?  White, wholesome, spelt, seed, light rye, rye, fruit and Vollkorn sourdough loaves as well as crumpets and semi-sourdough baguettes.

What are you most popular products?  We have something for everyone and produce to meet the demand.

How did you become a producer? Martin was missing genuine, quality, wholesome German style bread and started learning how to make it himself.

Who encouraged and supported you to take the leap to start your business?  William and Claire Wood from Careme Pastry

Who encouraged you to become a stallholder?  It was all part of the plan! Make German influenced sourdough bread and sell it at the Barossa Farmers Market! 

Who/what inspires you?  Our inspiration is driven by the satisfaction of running our own thriving business together. 

What are you personally most well known for?   Having a good yarn with our customers and maybe making people wait too long sometimes…! Sorry! 

How do you celebrate your success?  Saturday afternoons mark the end of a very big, full time week for us so we love going out for a nice meal locally after the market. 

Do you have a favourite recipe that you could share with us? Slice bread/toast crumpets and put something delicious on it!!

Could you share something interesting about your business? It is a very important part of our product and process that we only make sourdough products with our own sourdough culture and no extra bakers yeast.  

What is your favourite story from a customer about how they use your products?  I think the fact that we have had many consistent customers buying from us weekly over our 8 years at the Barossa Farmers Market and have developed many relationships with our community is a story in itself. 

What advice do you share with your customers about your products?  We are always happy to talk to our customers about bread!! Educating them on what the best loaf may be for their particular health needs or even just their entertaining needs! We love a chat!
